Altar Servers

Altar Servers 2010

Serving God

Our altar servers are a critical element of our Parish.  Dedicated to assisting Father Ugo and Father Jimmy in the celebration of the liturgy during mass, these fine young men and women serve as examples throughout mass.  They carry the cross and the processional candles, hold the book for our priests when they are not at the altar, carry the incense and censer, present the bread, wine, and water to them during the preparation of gifts and assist them when they receive the gifts from the people, wash the hands of our priests as well as respond to the prayers and dialogues along with the congregation.  Altar servers have a rich heritage, going back to Jesus himself.  In preparation for the Last Supper, Jesus sent two of his disciples to prepare the Passover for Himself and the Twelve. Eventually this evolved into today’s altar servers who love Jesus, love the Mass, and want to give their time and talents in the service of God and his church.

ALESSANDRA (11 years old):  “The reason why I am an altar server is because I want to serve God.  I really wanted to join the Italian choir as a volunteer for our church, but I don’t know all the Italian words yet.  So being up on the altar is my way as a child of helping our community and Father Ugo.  I also get lots out of being there.  Serving has helped me concentrate on the mass and helped me learn Italian better.  I love being a part of our community.”

EVA (8 years old):  “My favorite part about being an altar server is being able to be a part of the altar server community!  I feel like I am paying more and more attention to the priest during mass every Sunday. What I also love is that when Father Ugo says the homily and tells the story about the last supper with Jesus.  I feel like I am one of the disciples too.”
ANTHONY (19 years old): “I enjoy the spiritual aspects of being an altar server. Literally being at the altar serving God. I had thought about becoming an altar server but I was unsure whether that was what God was calling me to do. After praying and discerning, Fr. George had arrived at our church and invited me to altar serve. And it was as if that was the answer to my prayers.”

MELISSA (15 years old): “I enjoy being so close to the altar. It is an honor to be able to serve God. I enjoy helping train new altar servers and I hope that by seeing us altar server it will encourage others to altar serve no matter what age they are. I had been thinking and praying about becoming an altar server for a while before I did become one. My prayers were answered when Fr. George P. approached us and asked us if we would like to help altar serve. From that moment on it was clear God wanted us to altar serve. ”
